Artist Studio POP UP | Inaugural Launch Cocktails | Dec 3 from 5pm-9pm
OK. It’s true I see grit, power and drama in black and white.
It’s true black line takes center stage in all my work. (It’s been a long time since I last wore color!)
BLACK LINE CRAZY: It’s about spontaneous mark making and creating playful, exuberant black & white paintings, products and environments. So on December 2 + 3, I’m celebrating the first Black Line Crazy POP UP show in my studio (a black/white house, of course.) My inspiration? Creativity, re-invention and the exhilaration of drawing ourselves into new stories, and a new way of being.
WHAT TO EXPECT: You’ll see works for sale on paper and canvas as well as Black Line Crazy imagery exploding across messenger bags, lighting, wool rugs, hats, shopping bags and more. (I’m a Capricorn. That’s what Capricorns do!) This is my first POP UP so there are only a limited number of pieces for sale. (I will be taking orders.)
WHERE: In Colonia Guadalupe. Calle Farolito 6. (A 9-minute walk from Centro. 8-minute walk from Fabrica La Aurora. Or 5 blocks from Via Organica.)
FUN, INTERACTIVE: A street photographer will be on standby ready to take photos of you and friends with one of your Black Line Crazy pieces. Show up in black and white and be part of the show! (I’ll post on social media if you’re ok with that?)
BY WAY OF BACKGROUND: Like most of us, I’ve worn many hats. A Dutch sea captain’s daughter, my family lived in four continents – Venezuela, Canada, Holland and Australia – before I turned 15. No surprise I learned at an early age how to scope out the horizon and interpret the invisible clues – no matter what the country, culture or language. It seemed the best way to sense my place and identity in the world, and give it meaning. Probably no surprise either I was dubbed business psychologist. For the past 25+ years, I ran my branding agency with offices in New York & Sydney.
MY SAN MIGUEL STORY: A self-taught artist, designer, brander and radio host, I first visited San Miguel four years ago. Always the incurable doodler, being here compelled me to put aside my small drawing books and scale the work big, bold and impulsive. I knocked on artist Gerardo Ruiz’s studio door, rented a space and started with a brush and a can of black house paint. I painted until I ran out of wall.
It exploded floor to ceiling back in NY, trailed over gallery windows, fabric and three-legged stools in Sydney as part of my first exhibition last August at the Saint Cloche Gallery. When I first met gallery owner Kitty Wong, she asked how many shows I’d exhibited in. I gasped. This is my first, I whispered.
After an almost sold-out show and a stint in LA running corporate Brand Labs, I landed back here in February. Without a plan, I realized SMA has a special creative energy. (Familiar story, right?) I was lucky enough to find a truly eclectic Mexican house in Guadalupe. It’s now more studio than house.
Love to see you Dec 2 for the Inaugural Launch Cocktails 5-9pm. Or pop in Saturday, Dec 3, 12 – 6pm!
